Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all.
In fact, most of our students start with very little. While some of our students come to us with solid technical understanding, others have never touched DJ equipment before their first class.
PhDJ is designed to start from step one, building your skills step by step.
We assume you're new, explain everything clearly, and give you plenty of opportunities to practice, ask questions, and receive personalized feedback along the way.
If you're willing to learn and put in the practice, you can absolutely do this.
If you’re more technically experienced, you’ll be receive assignments that meet you where you’re at and uplevel the skills you’ve already developed.

PhDJ is for people who believe music is about more than entertainment.
Our students come from many different backgrounds. Some are dancers, yoga teachers, therapists, coaches, musicians or event producers. Others simply love music and feel called to learn a new craft.
What everyone who joins us has in common is a desire to create meaningful experiences that bring people together.
If you're excited to learn the technical craft of DJing—and you're willing to practice, stay curious, and grow alongside a supportive community—you'll likely feel right at home here.
Still not sure? Take our 3-minute assessment. It's designed to help you figure out whether PhDJ is the right next step for you.

Plan on dedicating about 7 hours per week.
Each week includes two live classes (3 hours total) plus a minimum of 4 hours of homework and practice behind the decks.
DJing is a hands-on craft. Like learning an instrument or a new language, there's no substitute for putting in the time. The more you practice, the more natural it becomes.
If you're looking for a quick, passive online course, PhDJ probably isn't the right fit.
But if you're ready to develop a real skill with the guidance, accountability, and community to support you — you'll be amazed at what's possible in eight months.
Graduation isn't based on logging practice hours, it's based on completing your assignments and demonstrating the skills you've learned.
We’ve estimated 4 hours per week outside of class, because we've found it's what helps most students succeed.

Life happens. Missing a class isn't the end of the world.
Every live class is recorded, so if you need to miss one, you'll be able to watch the replay and stay on track.
That said, we encourage students to attend live whenever possible. PhDJ is designed as a highly interactive learning experience, and there's real value in asking questions, receiving feedback, and learning alongside your classmates in real time.
If you have to miss a class occasionally, you'll be just fine. If you know you'll regularly be unable to attend live, let’s chat about your circumstances and whether this will be a good fit for you.
-
Before the course begins, we'll help you choose a setup that fits your goals and budget. Most students start with an entry-level DJ controller, a laptop, headphones and at least one monitor.
We teach on both Pioneer/Rekordbox and Native Instruments’ Traktor, so you'll be able to choose the platform that's right for you.
Once you're enrolled, we'll provide detailed equipment recommendations and help you get everything set up before your first class.

PhDJ is a hybrid program.
Most of the curriculum, coaching, and community happen live online, with students joining us from around the world. You'll participate in interactive classes, receive personalized feedback, collaborate with your cohort, and continue the conversation between sessions through our online platform.
The program also includes a 4+ day in-person Immersion.
Immersion is where everything comes to life. Together, we'll spend several days exploring music, movement, embodiment, creativity, connection, and play—experiencing firsthand the principles you'll be learning throughout the program. Many students describe it as one of the most meaningful parts of their PhDJ experience.
Throughout the program, you'll also be applying what you're learning in the real world—creating mixes, practicing your craft, and facilitating experiences in your own community.
While the majority of our students attend Immersion in person, we understand that isn't always possible.
If you're unable to join us, recordings of the DJ sets and talkback sessions will be available so you can continue learning from afar.
-
Yes! Most of our students come to us because they’re passionate about music and movement — not tech.
We’ve build the curriculum with this in mind, taking you step by step to build the technical mastery that will be the bedrock for your artistry and creativity.
-
Yes. Personalized feedback is a core part of the program.
Throughout PhDJ, you'll submit mixes and creative assignments for review, receiving thoughtful, actionable feedback from Tasha and the PhDJ coaching team.
Our goal isn't just to tell you what's working or what isn't—it's to help you understand why, so you can continue growing as a DJ long after the program ends.
Feedback is woven throughout the entire eight months—not reserved for a final project.
Learning alongside a cohort also means you'll benefit from hearing feedback on other students' work, giving you new perspectives and accelerating your own development.

PhDJ is a premium, eight-month training designed for people who are serious about mastering the craft of DJing.
Tuition is $9,000 USD when paid in full, $10,000 on a 5-month payment plan, or $11,000 on an 11-month payment plan.
Your tuition includes eight months of live instruction, personalized feedback from Tasha and the PhDJ coaching team, weekly coaching and community support, a comprehensive curriculum, and our multi-day in-person Immersion.
We recognize that this is a significant investment. We've intentionally created multiple payment options to make the program more accessible, and a limited number of scholarships are available each cohort.
If you're feeling called to this work but finances are the primary obstacle, we encourage you to apply. We'd rather have a conversation than have you quietly assume PhDJ isn't possible.

Our course materials, class replays and community forum lives on Circle - a user friendly social platform and app This is where you can ask questions, share music and experiences, and get support 24/7.
A ton of coaching happens around the assignments you turn in - especially your DJ mixes. You’ll receive feedback on Soundcloud and in Circle.
We also work throughout the program in smaller team-led groups that make it easy to connect with your fellow PhDJs for support, sharing, troubleshooting and connection.

Graduation isn't the end of the journey—it's the beginning.
Every PhDJ graduate leaves with a strong technical foundation, a unique artistic voice, and the confidence to create meaningful experiences through music.
What happens next looks different for everyone.
Some graduates go on to DJ professionally at clubs, festivals, ecstatic dances, retreats, and private events.
Others launch their own dance communities, movement practices, or educational programs.
Many bring what they've learned into their existing work as coaches, therapists, entrepreneurs, educators, and community leaders—using music as a powerful tool for connection, transformation, and belonging.
Maybe most importantly, you'll leave with a global community of fellow PhDJ graduates. Many of our alumni continue collaborating, booking one another, traveling together, and supporting each other's work long after the program ends.
-
Probably not.
Our students range from complete beginners to experienced DJs, from twenty-somethings to people starting entirely new chapters well into their 70s.
What matters most isn't your age or background—it's your willingness to learn, practice, and contribute to a supportive community.

Great! If you’re resonating with the school, we invite you to apply here.
The application itself can be very clarifying. If we review your application and it seems like a good fit, you’ll be invited to book a call with Tasha, where you can ask any additional questions.

“Now no matter what set I’m doing, I feel like a pro. My entire philosophy on what a DJ is and what a DJ can do is night and day.
You don’t know whether you’re going to hear something that’s going to bring you to tears or crack up or giggle.
What’s being given is confidence in yourself.”
You’ve heard the call.
Does all of this make you nervous and give you goosebumps?

“This program has so clearly been crafted with a deeply dedicated intelligence, soulfulness, wisdom, and love, and that it so clearly stems from an earnest desire to make change in this world by helping us - and those we will be serving - to unlearn excruciating socially-imposed patterns of relating to ourselves and the outside world.
The instruction occurs on multiple levels, in which the class content is perhaps the most tangible, but the meta-level design behind this content has us experiencing - and learning through these experiences - new ways to connect with others, a revolutionary style of leadership, the journey of the dance itself, and the wonder and the struggle of deep personal transformation.
There’s something extremely potent transpiring within the structure of the program itself. From the first class, I had this sense that I was being catapulted into a new reality, in which I was beginning to transform without having done anything other than bring with me the intention and desire to be moved and to change.”
