What are the 3 biggest key learnings from PhDJ?

We're all desperate for ritual and we can offer it to others if we tune into our body and let music come through it.

Perfectionism isn't the way. It doesn't even matter. WOOOOOOH.

If what you put out in the world comes from pleasure and honesty, you're about to manifest the most beautiful community.

What has your experience in PhDJ been like?

I've grown to feel excitement when discomfort and fear knock at my door. These sensations used to block me and keep me in comfort zones where I didn't thrive. Through PhDJ I learnt to embrace and use these sensations to unleash movement, breath, creativity. I mean, I was so into the experience that I applied to be a part of the leadership team for the next cohort (and got in!) I clearly can't get enough y'all.

How would you describe PhDJ to someone who doesn't know about it?

It's not quite a programme. It's not quite a course. Maybe it's an initiation. It's definitely nothing like what I've experienced before. It's a realm where everyone gets your love for music, your obsession with trying to understand and feel into why we're here in this world and how we can help free each other, and you repeatedly crack open in the most expansive ways and everyone in the group is doing it too and you all lift each other up to reach your dreams. If you want something a bit more down to Earth, it's the DJ-skills meets storytelling meets movement and body practices meets the books and the community you never knew you needed but now they're here and they're definitely changing your life and it's the start of a movement and you're a part of it.

What shifts in your life have you observed from the work we did in PhDJ?

I quit my job which was all about promoting other people's creative projects, without making use of my own creativity. I started my own night and sold out the first one one week before it actually happened. I'm running the event regularly and several venues want me and that. I'm planning on collaborating with other DJs and space holders to craft day time sexy and somatics-informed dance experiences. I see myself as capable of earning good money from my own talent. Writing this a year ago would literally have made me puke on the spot with shame and imposter syndrome and panic at the impossibility of it all. So basically the way I hold myself in the world has completely changed.

What are you most excited about for what's next for you?

I'm so excited to take my Soft Butch night to the next level with touring, day party and more dreamy possibilities + to platform and nourish my LGBTQIA+ community even more deeply through the event + to co-create new embodied dance events with new dance floor soul mates + to get bigger DJ gigs at events + to continue witnessing and supporting incredible PhDJ witches.

What would you tell someone who is interested in PhDJ?

Don't think about it. Feel about it. If imagining that you made it onto PhDJ makes you feel like you have pins and needles in your heart / you're about to drive off a cliff / your throat is about to explode with nervous laugh bubbles / etc, well. You should do it.

Lexx’s Mixes

A cheeky opening set for a night called Booty Bass. Starting with some smooth sxy energy, bringing up the energy gradually, and ending with a track that's dreamy and still activated to both land this part of the journey and keep the dance floor moving for the next DJ.

A mix for Ecstatic Prance, a crowd that's already used to letting go on the dance floor. A first track that announces the epic journey followed by a mix of genres and textures that build the tension up until we just dissolve into rapture gold dust. A soft landing that takes its time to allow everyone to digest the dance and stay with it.

The first iteration of Soft Butch, my night that celebrates all butchness, for women, NB and Trans people to dance freely together! Starting with an invocation for all bodies (inc mine!) to tune in, welcome everyone in and set the rules of the container. Striking a balance between tracks and genres that are recognisable and comfortable for this community, and music that you wouldn't hear at your usual Queer night, to create expansion and a new way of doing Queer nightlife.

“If you want something a bit more down to Earth, it's the DJ-skills meets storytelling meets movement and body practices meets the books and the community you never knew you needed but now they're here and they're definitely changing your life and it's the start of a movement and you're a part of it.
